State and Local Partners along with National Guard Assist the Effort
On Thursday, April 8, 40 homebound seniors in Williamson County received the Johnson and Johnson vaccine against the COVID-19 virus thanks to the efforts of the VaxMob, made up of Williamson County Emergency Medical Services Community Health Paramedics and the Williamson County Mobile Outreach Team (MOT), in collaboration with Texas Department of Emergency Management (TDEM), the National Guard, the Texas Infrastructure Fire Mutual Aid System (TIFMAS) and Round Rock Fire Department.
The VaxMob program was launched in support of Governor Greg Abbott’s Save Our Seniors Initiative, which targets areas around the state where the COVID-19 vaccine needs to reach to seniors wanting to get vaccinated, but who are unable to access a vaccination site easily.
Nine National Guard members, along with three TIFMAS members were deployed to expand the VaxMob’s capabilities and successfully vaccinated 40 seniors who desired to get the shot. This joint operation will continue next week in order to meet the demand of a growing list of homebound individuals still waiting to get vaccinated.
The VaxMob has been working closely with the non-profit Meals on Wheels to locate seniors in the county that are interested in getting the shot. To date, more than 528 seniors have been vaccinated through the VaxMob’s efforts. The VaxMob began vaccinating seniors on March 2, 2021.
