AGE of Central Texas, the City of Buda Task Force on Aging, San Antonio Area Foundation, SALSA Initiative, and Senior Planet are partnering to host the “I’m Not Elderly: Changing the Conversation About Aging” virtual seminar on May 4th, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Created for National Older Americans Month, the free community presentation aims to educate communication professionals and community leaders in Central Texas on aging trends and the impact of the reframing aging narrative in media audiences.
“Recent research shows that 9 out of 10 people living in Central Texas say ageism is a growing problem, because older adults’ experiences and wisdom is undervalued or under-celebrated,” says Rob Faubion, Director of Marketing & Communications for AGE of Central Texas, “and 71% of Central Texans say that the way mainstream media inauthentically represents older adults is a major cause for ageism in the community.”
“The reality is that older people have a lot to contribute to our community, but the language around aging typically creates a negative connotation around growing older,” says Jane Paccione, Managing Director of Collective Impact at the San Antonio Area Foundation. “The reframing aging initiative is a social change endeavor designed to improve the public’s under of aging, shed stereotypes, and remove obstacles.”
The upcoming seminar will address misinformation around aging, inform participants of trends in Central Texas, and discuss best practices when reporting on aging and older adults. The panel of expert presenters include:
- Linda Burton, City of Buda Task Force on Aging
- Rob Faubion, AGE of Central Texas
- Annette Juba, AGE of Central Texas
- Jane Paccione, Successfully Aging and Living in San Antonio (SALSA)
- Pat Whitty, Senior Planet San Antonio
