The Furrbaby Food Pantry of Georgetown has celebrated itβs first year in Georgetown, TX!
Originally created by Korri Bindl, who serves as the Furrbaby Food Pantry of Georgetown Coordinator, the organization helps bridge the gap between resources and pet owners in need.
βI was first inspired when I was volunteering at the Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter and there was an open bag of dog food that was donated,β Bindl told Hello Georgetown. βWhoever donated it sealed it with tape so that the food wouldnβt spoil but unfortunately the shelter would just have to dispose of this food (our shelter babies eat the same name brand food to prevent upset stomachs and opened bags of food will attract unwanted guests into the shelter.) The bag of food that was donated was practically full and I imagined that I could find someone who could really use it. I posted the food on a Georgetown community page and I received quite a few responses along with private messages of people within our community in need of this food.β
That one message started a movement and Bindl decided to create a Facebook group dedicated to gathering and dispensing donated supplies.
βThe Furrbaby Food Pantry is currently organized through the Furrbaby Food Pantry of Georgetown Facebook page,β Bindl said. βAny items I obtain or that are donated are posted with a photo along with an item description and condition it is in (whether it is open or not.) Once the item is listed, I usually go by first come basis or if someone is in higher need. From there I will give pick-up details and write the personβs name on the food to be picked up. The page is open for all, o people can also post on the page if they are looking for a specific item or they can message me directly.β
Anyone who would like to contribute or donate to the pantry can join the Facebook group, or email furrbabyfoodpantry@gmail.com. In the future, Bindl said she is looking forward to growing the group to trying to create a public location for the pantry, make it a certified 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and expand the movement to other cities and states.
βWe started with only a few members and now we have over 400 and we are growing daily,β Bindl said. βPupology in Georgetown has been a huge supporter of the pantry with making large donations and when you shop on their online store to buy food you can add a note βfor furrbaby food pantryβ and they will personally deliver these donations to the pantry. They really opened my eyes on getting other businesses involved this was a big milestone for me because it planted the idea that the pantry has no limitations on what it can grow to be and how everyone can be part of it.β
