Welcome to another edition of A+ Roofing Tips from APEX Roofing!
Today’s topic is all about chimneys. Second to the roof and foundation, the chimney can cause high dollar repairs/rebuilds.
Chimney Caps
According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, a chimney cap is, “a device fitted to the top of a chimney to improve the draft by presenting an exit aperture to leeward.”
If your chimney cap is inverted like a bird bath, water sits up there and will rust out the cap! This is one reason it’s important to make sure flashing is installed. Without flashing installed at the intersection of the roof and chimney, water has a direct entrance into the home when it rains or snows. Because of the materials that make up your masonry chimney, it also makes it susceptible to water damage.
Chimney Crickets
A chimney cricket is a sloped backing that diverts water away from the chimney and down the roof. A roofer builds a roof cricket out of wood and then adds metal flashing or asphalt shingles on top.
