This year marks the 20th anniversary of the annual Striking a Balance Caregiver Conference โ the largest, longest-run free caregiver conference in Central Texas. Co-hosted by AGE of Central Texas and the Area Agency on Aging of the Capital Area, the free conference event goes virtual with three days of online caregiving seminar from August 17th to the 19th to support family members who are caring for an older adult, followed by an in-person celebratory luncheon on August 21st.
The annual event provides unpaid caregivers with relevant information and vital resources to help to ease the challenges of caring for an aging family member. Participants will discover local resources, acquire skills to better manage their caregiving situation, and connect with national and local experts on aging.
Highlights of this yearโs virtual conference seminars include Bob Stephen, Vice President of Family Caregiving and Long Term Care at AARP, speaking on โWhat Does the Future Hold for Caregiving?โ In addition, best-selling author and columnist Dr. Barry J. Jacobs will discuss โCaregiver Compassion and Self-Care.โ
Additional presentations will include โPractical Tools for Dementia Caregivingโ with Sarah Hyde-Williams from Senior Living Advisors of Texas, โActivities Caregivers Can Share with Older Adults Living with Cognitive Issuesโ with dementia expert Nancy Turco, and โThe Ins and Outs of Long-Term Careโ with Michael Gill, President of Texas Senior Living Locators.
The in-person celebratory luncheon will be held on Saturday, August 21st, at the Norris Conference Center in Austin. The luncheon will feature special guest and television star Chet Garner, from The Daytripper, and will include an Information & Resource Fair.
