Community Rallies Together to Raise Funds for School Crossing Guard’s New Home

The Georgetown community is rallying together to raise funds for a school crossing guard’s new home.

“In 2012, we met Mr. Moe [Howard] at church,” Howard and Jeanette Workman wrote. “Ever since, we have watched Moe live a life of independence and integrity. Despite his best efforts, Moe needs help to take the next big step in his life – a new trailer to call home.”

While many may not know Moe Howard by name, they probably know him by his warm smile and school crossing guard outfit at a local elementary school where he works each day. Before working as a school crossing guard, he spent his life serving as an Army veteran, a truck driver/trainer, and an animal caretaker and volunteer.

“Over the past three years, Moe has lost over 120 lbs through controlling his diabetes with diet and discipline,” the Workman’s said. “This afforded him with the health he needed to secure a job as a crossing guard for GISD. He is dependable, faithful, and loyal to all those who cross his path. This past year, he has endured several skin cancer surgeries and a hernia operation. In spite of those challenges, he has continued to care for himself, his animals, and to show up to work. As his friends, we are proud to have watched Moe work hard to improve his health and financial situation, yet we know he needs additional help to quickly get him into a safer place to live.”

Howard and Jeanette Workman, who have spearheaded the fundraising effort, said that recent storms and bad weather have highlighted the pressing need for a new home for Moe.

“His 20-year-old RV is falling apart around him,” the Workman’s said. “In spite of efforts to tarp and tar the roof, it has been leaking for years, creating a toxic mold situation making it unhealthy for him and his beloved animals. The structure has simply worn out, leaving him with no indoor toilet facilities and rotting floors and walls.”

So far, the original fundraising goal of $20,000 has almost been met as many community members have donated and sent their well wishes for this next step in his life.

“I appreciate everybody that helped me get closer to my new home,” Moe Howard said in an update. “You’ve helped me to stay on my feet and have given my dogs a good home, too. Thank you for helping me take care of my family. It really means a lot knowing that people cared. I appreciate everybody whether you were able to give or not, just know that I love you all. And thank you and God bless everyone.”

With just a few thousand left to the go, the Workman’s said they hope to hit the goal and if they exceed the goal, will use the remaining funds to cover any additional expenses that come up with the purchase of an RV or the building and transport of a tiny home.
