If you visit the Secondhand Prose bookstore in the Georgetown Public Library, you may notice something different.
Thatβs because on Saturday, October 30, the Friends of the Georgetown Public Library gathered to honor the memory of Martha Lawlor, long-time member of the Friends, through the donation and installation of new furniture at the bookstore.
βMembers who attended had an opportunity to sit in one of the two new, very comfy, chair and admire the new desk β in addition to sampling some very nice snacks,β the Friends of the Georgetown Public Library wrote.
Martha Lawlor served as president of the organization from 2007 to 2009 and served on the Board of Directors for many years. She also played an instrumental role in many milestones with the Friends of the Georgetown Public Library, they added, including:
- Establishing Second-Hand Prose
- Bringing to Fruition the WOW!Mobile and the WOW:HD home delivery van
- Launching the monthly Sunday live music program
- Creating the Hill Country Authors series
βItβs an honor, really, because she did so much for the library,β Donald Ballard, husband to Martha, told Hello Georgetown. βEverybody appreciated the work she did, and this shows you how well she was liked.β
Ballard also said Second-Hand Prose really became what it is today because of Marthaβs efforts. Before the bookstore was established, the library held a big sale twice a year, an effort the whole family and Friends organization, got involved in.
βEspecially when we have the annual or semiannual book sales,β Ballard said. βEverybody jumped in and helped, especially the Friends.β
Martha passed away February 28, 2020, but her legacy is far from over. Since her time in the early days of the Friends of the Georgetown Public Library, the organization has grown to over 1,000 members and has been able to fund numerous projects for the library.
