When it comes to improving health, there are a variety of ways to make changes.
For Melissa Vasquez, licensed massage therapist, esthetician and owner of Armonia 4:16 at Anchored Wellness, change can start with something as simple as improving one’s skincare.
“One of the key aspects of aesthetics is skincare,” Vasquez told Hello Georgetown. “Skin being the largest organ of the body and directly affected by massage aiding in the increase of blood flow and waste excretion, aiding in cell regeneration, [and] promoting healthier looking and feeling skin.”
Vasquez told Hello Georgetown she has always been fascinated by how the body works and originally pursued massage therapy as a stepping stone to learning more about that. Along the way, Vasquez fell in love with how massage therapy can help others find wellness.. Now, using her skills in both massage therapy and aesthetics, Vasquez helps people to feel and function better in a way that is custom to each individual.
“Massage brings so much value to one’s life not just from a βfeel goodβ aspect but from a total wellness approach,” Vasquez said. “Massage therapy goes deeper than soft tissue (muscles) of the body, as everything is literally connected and there are so many ways to approach those connections with different modalities of therapy, helping each individual body system, there truly is not only one way to treat the body.”
The benefits, she added, go beyond improving physical health.
“Sometimes your mental wellness can go unnoticed due to pain or simply disconnection all together,” Vasquez said. ‘Massage helps to quiet the things from the outside and gives you a mind’s eye into your well being. Our mental health is vital to the function of our physical and mental well being. Massage simply gives you the space you need sometimes to notice and take steps to address those issues.”
Vasquez also acknowledges that improving one’s health also starts with changing how we think about our own personal needs and approach to wellness.
“I find that just the word wellness can be intimidating and at times feel like it has to be an all or nothing mindset,” Vasquez said. “Personal wellness is a journey, she added, and involves taking small and consistent steps everyday to create change. Adding an extra glass of water to your daily intake, adding something green to your diet or simply giving yourself permission to end your day a little early to decompress.”
