Georgetown, TX: A gas leak caused by a private contractor striking an Atmos Energy line closed down several roads and led to the evacuation of nearly 400 buildings in the downtown Georgetown area on Wednesday.
As of 5 p.m. Wednesday, crews had isolated and stopped the leak, and the Georgetown Fire Department lifted the evacuation order. The following road closures remain in place until further notice:
- University Avenue from Austin Avenue to Myrtle Street
- Main Street from University Avenue to 10thΒ Street
- Church Street from University Avenue to 10thΒ Street
- 11thΒ Street from Main to Myrtle streets
- Main and Church streets from 16thΒ Street to University Avenue will remain open to local traffic only.
The leak was reported to Georgetown dispatch about 9:45 a.m. with the first fire unit arriving on scene within five minutes. Georgetown fire crews began precautionary evacuations shortly thereafter. The evacuation area initially encompassed 11th to 15th streets and Scenic Drive to Church Street. About 1 p.m., the area was increased to include 10th Street due to changing winds. The Georgetown Fire Department estimates 388 buildings were evacuated in the downtown area. The leak also caused several roads in the area to be closed.
Residents who smelled gas were encouraged to report it to Atmos Energy by calling 866-322-8667.
