The Vegetation Station is coming to Georgetown!
The community garden is being spearheaded by Sooze and Leo Wolfe, who serve as the directors of the project, and Kenneth Witherspoon, who is the project specialist, and will serve local food pantries as well as the community at large.
βPre-pandemic we saw the condition of the fresh vegetables being offered at the local pantries,β the couple told Hello Georgetown. βAlthough they were doing the best they could, they were given wilted items to hand out. During the pandemic there was very little fresh to be had, even in the local grocery stores. We thought people who depend on pantries deserved better. The supply chain had broken down in many ways. Our project is very flexible. Depending on the size of the land site we will create vegetable gardens, for the larger sites we will add livestock or chickens, providing the benefit of fresh eggs.β
Currently, the project is working with Georgetown Housing Authority, the couple said, and recently became a project of the Natural Resilience Fund, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
βWith the NRF and the help of Georgetown Housing Authority, who we are negotiating a land site with, we hope to attain funding to break ground very soon,β the couple said. βThis pilot location will catapult us into larger future projects that we visualize as a destination spot, complete with a sensory garden, local art projects, learning centers, farmerβs market, and eventually a kitchen.β
Funding is the priority right now, they added, as the project depends solely on donations. You can learn more about the project on their Facebook page or by emailing vegiestat@gmail.com.
We will continue updating this story with details as we learn more information, stay tuned!
