Annual Nathan Chapman Honor Walk Scheduled for November 5

On Saturday, November 5th, Georgetown residents will participate in the 6th annual Nathan Chapman Honor Walk.

The 5K walk kicks off the Georgetown Texas Field of Honor, and honors veterans and first responders. Jim Wilson, a Georgetown Sertoma Club Board Member, said the honor walk started when a former member wanted to honor those that have served by acknowledging the sacrifice made for their country.

“The walk is named in honor of Nathan Ross Chapman whose military career spanned 13 years,” according to the Georgetown Sertoma Club, who hosts the walk. “Army Sergeant First Class Chapman, with 1st Special Forces Group, was the first American soldier killed in combat in Afghanistan. On September 11, 2006, a bronze casting dedicated to Chapman’s memory was put on display at the Georgetown Courts Building where it resides today.”

Starting at and finishing at the Georgetown Texas Field of Honor, participants carry a hand held American flag, dedicated to a veteran or first responder. A nominal fee of $10 for Veterans and First Responders and $25 for other walkers is requested, and the organization said this year’s proceeds go to support local nonprofits Heroes Night Out and Wilco Blue Star Mothers.

“This event provides an opportunity to acknowledge the sacrifices made by those who serve in harms way for the rest of us,” Wilson said. “Register to walk in our beautiful park to honor those Veterans or First Responders that have served in some way to protect us.”
