The City of Georgetown is rehabilitating the historic Austin Avenue vehicle bridges that span the San Gabriel River. The rehabilitation will address deteriorating bridge components, improve safety and mobility, and provide effective connections to the surrounding trail network. Construction began Monday, Oct. 14, and is expected to be complete in spring 2026.
During construction, travel lanes on Austin Avenue from Morrow Street to Second Street will be reduced from two lanes in each direction to one lane in each direction. All traffic will be shifted to the east to allow room for crews to work safely and efficiently. Once work is completed on the west side of the bridges, the contractor will shift traffic to the west to complete work on the east.
Starting this week during the overnight hours, crews expect to close all lanes on Austin Avenue from Morrow Street to Second Street. Lanes will be closed Monday through Thursday nights starting at 10 p.m. each night and reopened for travel by 7 a.m. the following morning. All work is dependent on weather and field conditions. Detours will be in place during overnight bridge closures.
Please see the enclosed maps for detour routes and remember to follow all directional signage and remain alert while driving.
Morrow Street, Second Street, and San Gabriel Village Boulevard will remain open throughout construction. All hike and bike trails along the North and South forks of the San Gabriel River under the Austin Avenue bridges also will remain open. Crews will place overhead protective barriers along the portions of the trails that cross under the bridges to keep trail users safe during work activities. Short-term trail closures at the bridges may be needed during more complex work activities; more information will be shared as work and closures are scheduled. Pedestrians can access the trail at South Rock Street south of the bridges or at Morrow Street north of the bridges.
