For graduate intern Satara-Marie Smith, listening has been something sheβs always been good at.
βEven as a teenager, as a child, my empathetic listening helped people feel connected to share with me,β Satara-Marie Smith, a graduate level intern at Anchored Wellness, told Hello Georgetown. βI would always listen, not necessarily offer advice, but I would just listen and it didnβt bother me being able to listen to people, but they knew to come to me. So, I was a safe space.β
After spending years listening, and experiencing mental health challenges herself with postpartum depression following the birth of her child, Smith said she decided to pursue a professional career in helping others.
βI earned my bachelorβs degree in psychology in 2018,β Smith said. βI am looking to support women and men through various life transitions. Iβm looking to support moms that are in transition with being stay-at-home moms, because Iβve been there for the last four years. Iβm also looking to support people with questions about what a healthy relationship looks like as I have also worked as a Domestic Violence advocate and a healthy relationship advocate.β
In addition to working with moms and couples, Smith added she also works with adolescents, adults experiencing life transitions, and individuals struggling with anxiety. At Anchored, Smith gets the opportunity to connect with a variety of people as she works on her masterβs degree under the supervision of Emily Kipp-Wright, and enjoys helping people learn how to navigate lifeβs challenges.
βItβs okay to breathe,β Smith said. βYou have to remember to give yourself oxygen before you can give anybody else around youβ¦you have to remember to take care of yourselfβ¦Breathe, everything doesnβt have to be done in one day.β
