What would you ask a war hero if you had the chance?
Faith in Action is offering an opportunity for the community to do just that. On July 1, 2021, Faith in Action will host Portraits of Independence: A Celebration of Our Seniors at LampPost Coffee, 809 S. Main Street, Georgetown.
At 4 p.m., friends, family and VIPs will partake of a coffee reception where they will peruse 12 portraits of seniors ages 80 and over, who have lived extraordinary lives. At 5:30 p.m., doors open to the general public for a Q&A from several local WWII veterans, who will share their experiences and reflections. Include in this panel will be Ernie Columbus, 101-year-old WWII veteran and a member of the first United States Air Force division. 100-year-old French Legion of Honor medal recipient Grover Trytten will join him to visit about his time at Normandy.
The Q&A will be followed by a wine & cheese reception and portrait viewing honoring all of the seniors served by the organization. This is a family friendly event, but seating is limited.
Faith in Action Georgetown is celebrating 20 years of service to Georgetown seniors this year, and the Q&A event is one way they are celebrating.
βItβs important to us that seniors are valued, not just for who they have been but for who they are now,β said Vickie Orcutt, Executive Director. βThese portraits are our way of thanking them for being such a vibrant part of our community. And we are thrilled to provide an opportunity for the public to hear from a couple of our incredible veterans. Itβs an honor to serve them.β
Faith in Action provides transportation to seniors who can no longer drive on their own, alongside other support services like care calling and referrals. For many seniors, Faith in Action is a lifeline to independence. Itβs Go-Van-Go van rides allow seniors to grocery shop on their own, while individual volunteers provide rides to medical appointments and other important destinations.
βWe are looking forward to sharing our stories with the public,β said Orcutt.
Aside from awareness, the organization is in need of volunteers interested in a very flexible opportunity that serves such an important group.
Proceeds from the Portrait and Q&A event will go to support Faith in Actionβs programs.
