A Georgetown Family is holding a unique fundraiser on Saturday, August 14 to help raise funds to offset the cost of their adoption while also helping a local woman in need.
The Project
Through the organization Both Hands, the Turner family and a team of volunteers are working on the home of Patty Funes, who lives in Georgetown.
βWe met Ms. Patty through our friends at church who live two doors down from Patty,β Amanda Turner told Hello Georgetown.Β βThey told us they knew she was having a hard time because her roof was in disrepair. After meeting with Patty we discovered that she was the full time caretaker for her mother and that she had suffered a back injury that greatly diminished her mobility. Her 20-year-old son works 2 jobs to help support them. We will be doing yard work, painting, small repairs, cleaning, and adding safety rails in the bathrooms.β
Additionally, the Turners are hoping to fill Pattyβs greatest need, a roof replacement.
βCurrently, her roof leaks water into her home during storms,β Amanda Turner said. βAn application has been sent to Habitat for Humanity for a roof replacement, and we hope to receive final approval for a roof this week.β
Many local businesses, Turner said, have donated to the project including HEB, Sherwin Williams, and Freebirds World Burrito.
Adoption
The impact of project to help Ms. Patty doesnβt just stop at her household, but also helps a child. The Turners are looking to grow their family through adoption and Both Hands helps them accomplish that.
βThe adoptive family and their team raise sponsorship for their project day through sending letters much the same way someone would ask for sponsorship for a 5k race or charity golf tournament,β Turner said βThe team asks local businesses to donate supplies or services and 100% of the funds raised go to help cover the adoption cost for the adopting family. No funds raised by the adopting family and their team are deducted for Both Handsβ operating costs.β
So far, the Turner family has raised over $9,600 of their $45,000 goal at the time of this article.
βWe are excited to grow our family through adoption,β the Turners wrote. βGod has continually led us to passages revealing His heart for the fatherless, and other passages pointing to our own adoption through faith in Christ Jesus. In 2017, after hearing a news report about the overrun foster system in Texas and the Governor asking for churches to step up and fulfill James 1:27, Charlie came home and said, βAmanda, I think God is calling us to foster or adopt.β We also have received a generous matching grant of $5,000, so all donations up to that amount are doubled!β
Since 2008, Both Hands projects have raised over $13,900,000 for adoptions and orphan care. Through 1,000+ Both Hands projects in 44 states, 1,199 widows have been served, 1,346 orphans are one step closer to forever families, and over 25,000 volunteers have gathered to make an impact in their community.
Lending a Hand
Right now, the Turners have said they have plenty of volunteers for the event, but there are other ways people can help.
βOur prayer is that we would be overwhelmed by Godβs provision for both our adoption and for Ms. Patty,β Turner said. βWe hope that our story inspires others to pray about foster care or adoption either by fostering or adopting themselves or supporting others who are. We also hope that by serving Ms. Patty our eyes will be opened to our neighbors in need.β
