The Georgetown Public Library is giving away free milkweed plants during the first week of May!
βIn honor of spring and our Earth Day week events, the Georgetown Public Library is giving away FREE milkweed plants,β the library said. βMilkweed is a critical component in the annual migratory flight of monarch butterflies.β
The giveaway is co-sponsored by the Native Plant Society of Texas, and registration goes from April 26 through May 2 (or until the library runs out) and can be completed here. Pickup for reserved milkweed plants will be at the Georgetown Public Library from May 3 to May 9.
According to Texas Parks and Wildlife, monarch butterflies migrate through Texas in the fall and the spring. During this time of the year, the monarchs seen in the area are migrating up through Texas from further south.
βEarly each March overwintering monarchs begin arriving from their overwintering grounds in Mexico,β Texas Parks and Wildlife wrote. βSeeking emerging milkweeds, they move through Texas laying eggs before dying. Their offspring continue heading north, leaving most of Texas behind, the first of several new generations of monarchs that re-populate the eastern half of the United States and southern Canada.β
