Skinner’s Screens is celebrating 50 years of business and commemorating the history and service that makes them a special part of the Georgetown business community.
Skinner’s specializes in custom design and manufacturing of residential screens, windows, storm, solar screens, screen doors, and outdoor enclosures in Georgetown and Marble Falls, TX.
Mike and Connie Cochran are the current owners of Skinner’s, having purchased the company in 2017. But, the roots of Skinner’s go back to 1972 when Orville “Bud” Skinner started building screens for family members and friends in his garage. The business took off and Skinner built a shop behind his garage to make more screens.
After Skinner’s passing in 1985, Richard Bunte purchased the business. Bunte was an Austin firefighter but had been helping Skinner on his off days since Skinner started the company. Bunte continued his work as a firefighter and ran Skinner’s simultaneously, which was no small feat to put in 45 hours for the fire department plus over 30 hours a week at Skinner’s.
In 1991 Bunte sold the business to Steve Faught, who moved it to it’s current location on Williams Drive. Faught sold to the Cochrans five years ago, who also own APEX Roofing and APEX Gutters.
For five decades Skinner’s has prided itself on customer care and a philosophy centered on the principles of integrity, service, and quality.
“We hand measure our screens, doors, storm doors, and patio enclosures,” Mike Cochran said. “It is a niche business and there are not a lot of resources for these type of products. You cannot buy screens at big box stores. We measure them and we custom make the screens for the customer.”
Skinner’s specializes in insect screens, solar screens, patio enclosure screens, storm doors, Bulldog Security Screen products that protect your home, and AllergyGuard™ screens. They are also a dealer of Don Young Company storm doors.
Fifty years in business brings many milestones and accomplishments. “Some highlights of the past 50 years include expanding our market and our product offerings, plus remodeling our building,” Cochran said. “Being able to contribute to the local economy and the causes we support is very important to us.”
The Cochrans value the community which is evident by their support of many local organizations including Living Grace Canine Ranch, Meals on Wheels, The Caring Place, Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter, National Child Safety Council, Faith in Action Georgetown and Kiwanis.
“We look forward to continued involvement in the community and the local Georgetown Chamber,” Cochran said. “We also look forward to continued growth by word of mouth business, which is the BEST kind.”
