Southern Living Magazine has named Georgetown, Texas as one of the best college towns in the south!
βHome to Southwestern, the Lone Star Stateβs first university, Georgetown is a popular Hill Country destination thanks to its Victorian architecture, central park and square, and restaurants like the diner-style Monument Cafe on South Austin Avenue,β the magazine wrote. βTry the fried organic-chicken sandwiches or the blueberry pancakes, fresh off the griddle and onto your breakfast plate.β
Georgetown appeared on the magazineβs list, βThe Southβs Best College Townsβ alongside several other college towns including:
- Charlottesville, Virginia
- Chapel Hill, North Carolina
- Athens, Georgia
- Knoxville, Tennessee
- Bryan/College Station, Texas
- Annapolis, Maryland
- Auburn, Alabama
- Blacksburg, Virginia
- Columbia, Missouri
- Davidson, North Carolina
- Fayetteville, Arkansas
- Gainesville, Florida
- Morgantown, West Virginia
- Oxford, Mississippi
The criteria the college towns had to meet to make the list included:
βA population under 200,000 (thus excluding favorites like Austin) so that the school has an incredibly strong impact on the town,β the magazine wrote. βA lively local scene with good, affordable restaurants, independent boutiques, and support of the arts, a dedicated and active alumni base, a healthy dose of Southern charm.β
