You’ve probably heard of 2-factor authentication before if you use social media or apps that require a login. This security feature is usually optional but, in this day and age, it should be mandatory. With the amount of information available online and with hackers on the rise, keeping your accounts as secure as possible is crucial. Let’s look at what 2-factor authentication is and how it works.

What is 2-Factor Authentication?

2-factor authentication occurs after you input your username and password. Next, the website or app will send you a code or one-time password to verify you’re really you. They will send this code to a designated email address or text it to the provided phone number. This means it’s important to keep your account information up to date.

Once you input the code or one-time password into the app or website, you’ll be able to access your account normally. It’s a simple way to ensure if someone tries to hack your account, they won’t be able to log in and you’ll be notified so you can change your password quickly.

What are the Benefits of 2-Factor Authentication?

When you enable 2-factor authentication you’re ensuring your accounts are much more secure and protecting other accounts from being compromised as well. When a hacker gets into one account, it’s even easier for them to access other accounts, especially if you repeatedly use the same passwords.

2-factor keeps hackers out and notifies you when a hacker is attempting to gain access to your information. It’s a win-win situation and extremely easy to set up. Instead of leaving the door to your accounts wide open, add an extra layer of security. Often if a hacker encounters difficulty, they’ll move on to someone else who has less protection in place.

How to Enable 2-Factor Authentication

While all accounts are a little different, usually you will be able to enable 2-factor authentication by going into settings, selecting security, then 2-factor authentication. Social media and banking apps often prompt users to enable 2-factor upon logging in as well. Just make sure you always double-check the email or phone number before the code is sent and you should be good to go.
