On Friday, August 26, GAF Energy broke ground in Georgetown, TX on what will become the world’s largest solar roof manufacturing facility.
The 450,000-square foot manufacturing facility located off SE Inner Loop is the second for the company and will produce their award-winning Timberline Solarβ’ roof.
“GAF Energy was founded with the belief that we could build a reliable, durable, and attractive solar roof, one that would be affordable for all Americans and could be installed easily by local roofing partners,” Keally DeWitt, Vice President, Marketing & Public Policy at GAF Energy, said at the groundbreaking. “From the founding of the company, we believed that this solar roof could be manufactured in America, and today proves that that can be done. When this facility is complete, it will be the largest solar roofing manufacturing facility…that is history in the making, and most importantly, it will create hundreds of jobs.”
According to the company, the product is the first nailable solar shingle in the world, integrating solar panels and shingles in to one product.
“Unlike a traditional solar panel, which you mount on top of a roof and you have another roof underneath of it, it’s an integrated product. So it’s something where a roofer will actually nail the product down and install it, and there’s nothing underneath of it,” Ralph Robinett, Senior Vice President, Manufacturing & Deployment at GAF Energy, told Hello Georgetown. “It carries the same warranties for hail, for wind, for weather, for time and it’s generating clean energy on your own roof.”
Mayor Josh Schroeder applauded the company’s decision to build in Georgetown, TX and the jobs GAF Energy will bring to the community.
“We say all the time that we want Georgetown to be a complete community, a place where you can live work, go to school, go to church and play all in the same community,” Mayor Josh Schroeder said. “To do that, we’ve got to have jobs, and so when companies like [GAF Energy] come to town and bring great, high paying jobs to our community, that’s thrilling…this is keeping your property taxes low, this is going to be jobs for your kids, this is gonna be business for your business, and so we thank GAF so much for investing in our community.”
GAF Energy is projected to be complete by summer of 2023, with full operation by the end of that year. Portman Industrial is the owner and developer of the building and ARCO/Murray is the construction partner.
