The Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter is offering advice to pet owners ahead of the 4th of July weekend.
βThe 4th of July celebrations will begin before you know it, and we want to help you keep your pets safe at home,β the shelter wrote on Facebook. βWe are dangerously overcrowded already, and this holiday brings us the most lost pets each year, so do all you can to keep them safe with you at home!β
Here are some steps the shelter outlined to keep pets safe during the holiday weekend:
1. Keep them secure by checking fences, doors, and other escape routes
2. Update IDs such as collars, tags and microchip contact info in case they do become lost
3. Plan ahead by exercising and walking pets well ahead of festivities. Then keep them inside.
4. Minimize noiseΒ by running a fan, white noise machine, tv or radio to help distract them
5. Settle inΒ for the evening and try to keep your pet calm if youβre able to keep them company.
Additionally, the shelter is hosting a 4th of July Adoption special from Thursday, June 30 through Monday, July 4.
βThe 4th of July is often celebrated with family gatherings, backyard barbeques, and fireworks. With this holiday each year, we see our largest influx of lost pets, and we are already at ππ«π’ππ’πππ₯ capacity,β the shelter wrote on the Facebook event. βHelp us make space for all the newly lost pets who are sure to arrive by adopting before the festivities. Adoptions of all medium-to-large adult dogs and adult cats are just $4, through the 4th. Preview adoptable pets at wilcopets.org. Then email adoption@wilco.org to schedule an appointment and reduce your wait time!β
