The Williamson County Commissioners Court approved a resolution recognizing September as National Preparedness Month.
National Preparedness Month serves as a reminder that residents and businesses should take action to prepare, now and throughout the year, for the types of emergencies that could affect them where they live, work and also where they visit.
βIn the midst of this pandemic, keeping our community informed about public health issues is paramount,β said Michael Shoe, Williamson County director of Emergency Management. βDisasters can happen anywhere, at any time, even in your home. With that said, we want to urge all Williamson County residents to remain mindful of the dangers that could occur and have a strategy in the event of a natural or man-made crisis. Staying informed and establishing a plan for these types of events can literally save lives.β
Additionally, Shoe recommended taking three proactive steps to helps residents and businesses stay safe:
- Build a Kit β Build an easy-to-carry emergency preparedness kit that you can use at home or take with you if you must evacuate. Include items such as water, non-perishable food, a flashlight and extra batteries, a battery-powered radio, first aid kit and medications.
- Make a Plan β Talk with members of your household about what to do during emergencies. Plan what to do in case everyone is separated and choose two places to meet β one right outside your home in the event of a sudden emergency such as a fire and another outside your neighborhood, in case you cannot return home or are asked to evacuate.
- Be Informed β Know what kinds of emergency situations may occur where you live, where you work, and where you go to school. Get trained in First Aid and CPR/AED so youβll know what to do in an emergency if help is delayed. Donβt forget your pets, plan for them too.
