September is National Preparedness Month and Williamson County, TX is offering tips and resources to residents.
“One of the best ways to protect your family, property and self is by staying informed. You can sign up for emergency alerts in your neighborhood by text, email or phone at warncentraltexas.org,” the county said. “You may not be with your family when a disaster hits, so it’s important to make an emergency plan with your family ahead of time. Make sure everyone knows how you’ll reconnect if the family is separated.”
Additionally, the county offered recommendations of items to include in emergency kits including:
- Water (one gallon per person for several days)
- Food (at least a several -day supply of non-perishable food)
- Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio
- Flashlight
- First aid kit
- Extra batteries
- Manual can opener
- Local maps
- Medicine
It’s important to create emergency kits for pets as well, they added, and pet preparedness kits should include:
- Food for several days
- Water
- Collar with ID tag and a harness or leash
- Medicine
- Grooming items
- Sanitation needs
- A picture of you and your pet together
