The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce Thursday presented Georgetown ISD nurses with the Cornerstone Award for healthcare, a prestigious recognition of the team’s commitment to serving the district’s families and staff and lending their expertise to the greater Georgetown community during the pandemic.
Each year, the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce recognizes organizations and/or individuals who excel in each one of the four community cornerstones: economic development, education, healthcare and public safety. School nurses are the professional link between schools and leaders public health. They provide accurate and timely information to families and community members on public health developments, and they work directly with principals, teachers, custodial staff and other employees to ensure successful planning and implementation of evidence-based prevention and response practices.
Georgetown ISD is one of the only school districts in the area to employ a bachelor’s prepared registered nurse (RN) at every school. Each nurse has training in public health, epidemiology and illness management, and many have first-hand experience in trauma and critical care units.
The school district greatly benefits from this high level of professional nursing care, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. During the crisis, GISD nurses helped with meal distribution, gathered personal protection equipment for Williamson county, monitored and screened guests to ensure safe graduation events, and reached out to students with chronic health conditions to ensure ongoing care.
School nurses are critical to ensuring students are healthy and ready to learn. In fact, they have been associated with increased classroom attendance and improved academic achievement. During a pandemic and in normal times, GISD is proud to provide the security of high-level professional nursing care to its students, families, employees and community members.
