In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, there are several free events planned for us including a Youth Service Day, Day of Service, a 7 Block March and Program and an Interdisciplinary Symposium.
So get the family together for this important Holiday; because as you can see there’s plenty going on to honor and celebrate the Life and beliefs of Dr. King!
March and Program on Jan. 15th
A march to honor the MLK Day holiday begins on Monday, Jan. 15 at noon on the north side of the Courthouse. MAP
After meeting on the north side of the Courthouse on Seventh Street, there will be a seven-block march to Macedonia Baptist Church, 206 Martin Luther King Jr. St. The annual event is sponsored by the Georgetown Fellowship of Churches. MAP to Church
A program beginning at 12:30 p.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church features guest speakers Daniel Blaine, pastor of Mt. Ararat Missionary Baptist Church of Bartlett, and Rev. Steve Miller, project director and founder of the HBCU Truth & Reconciliation Oral History Project. The march and program are free and open to the public. Youth Service Day on Jan. 15th
The Georgetown Project hosts a Youth Service Day on MLK Day for youth in grades nine to 12 at the Teen Center. The Youth Service Day starts at 9am. The Teen center is located on the north end of the Georgetown Recreation Center at 1003 N. Austin Avenue. Map
Service projects include games with seniors at Park Place a senior center, park clean-up and beautification in San Gabriel Park, cleanup and organization at the NEST Empowerment Center for Teens, window cleaning at The Georgetown Project office, working at Habitat ReStore, making blankets for at-risk children at Southwestern University and painting and landscaping at Willie Hall Center. Students needing service hours will be given certificates for four hours of service.

Day of Service – Adults and Youth on Jan. 15
The United Way of Williamson County is sponsoring a Day of Service on MLK Day from 9am to noon for youth or adults. Symposium, Screening, and Service at Southwestern on Jan. 18 – 25th.
Worship Service: A special worship service celebrating the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 18, in the Lois Perkins Chapel.
Ron Swain of Georgetown will deliver the message and special music will be led by Southwestern gospel singers.
“An Evening with Delores Huerta” on Thursday, Jan. 18, at 6pm in Olin 105. Dolores Huerta, is an activist and labor leader who has worked to improve social and economic conditions for farm workers and to fight discrimination. More information is available at www.southwestern.edu/live/
Symposium: The Race and Ethnicity Studies Program at Southwestern University is hosting an interdisciplinary symposium on Tuesday, Jan. 23, and on Thursday, Jan. 25, from 5:30 to 7:30pm each day in the McCombs Shields Ballroom in the McCombs Campus Center.
The symposium includes Southwestern scholars, including current faculty and alumni, who are engaged in research and activism related to race and ethnicity studies. More information is available at www.southwestern.edu/live/
