New Church Launches on the Georgetown Square

Many people visit the Square to eat, drink, shop and socialize. Now they can go to Church on the Square, too.
That’s the name of the new nondenominational church that kicks off this Sunday, May 24 at 11 a.m. at Ken’z Guitars, 705 S. Main St.
Pastor Bradley Helgerson acknowledged that it’s a weird time to start a church, but he felt a calling to begin a work in Georgetown after he moved here a year ago. He, his wife Pamela and their five children live in Old Town.
Like every true Georgetownian, Bradley asked himself, “How can I serve Georgetown?”
He decided to do his part by leading people to God. It wasn’t always his goal, though – he was an agnostic until age 33. Bradley said his belief lacked meaning, purpose and value, which was fine when he was in his 20s and thought he was invincible. But when he got married and started having kids, he realized he needed to find meaning, an anchor for his soul.
Now he’s on a mission to revive the church, reach the city and renew the culture through The Church on the Square.
“The Georgetown Square is the heart of the city, and we want to woo it to Christ,” Bradley said.
He plans to do so by reaching out to people in this modern age, a time when he said believing is difficult for many people who have challenging questions about faith.
“Our desire is to create a space where these objections can be respectfully explored,” he said. “A place where skeptics and their questions are welcome.”
He added that increasing skepticism requires a more comprehensive approach to evangelism, discipleship and cultural engagement. The church is passionate, he said, about preparing congregants to minister effectively in the 21st century.
