Jonny Reach, owner of San Gabriel Paddlesports, launched his new business on July 7 of this year and is helping Georgetown residents discover a new way to enjoy water recreation. He’s had over 25 rentals so far. Reach has lived in Georgetown the past 15 years and spends a considerable amount of time on Lake Georgetown and the San Gabriel River.
The idea of San Gabriel Paddlesports started 10 years ago when Reach received his first kayak and immediately fell in love with it.
“From then on, I knew I wanted to do something with kayaks”, Reach explained. “I started my rental company to introduce people to kayaks. There are people who want to get a feel for them first before investing in their own.”
“Transporting kayaks are difficult. Higher quality kayaks are more expensive, require a larger investment, are heavier and bigger – some of the hulls are upwards of 160 pounds. The logistical challenges sway some people away”.
The rental business was the solution to a problem, describes Reach. “The rental process makes it easy so you don’t have to transport them (kayaks) yourself”.
According to Reach, most rental companies provide basic kayaks; ones that aren’t high quality, and after a year, are thrown out due to damage. Reach did not want to go that route, and instead went with more stable kayaks that last longer, can handle a lot of weight and are easy for first timers to have a comfortable and enjoyable experience.
San Gabriel Paddlesports operates completely mobile. Reach comes to you on Lake Georgetown at an agreed upon desired time and provides the kayaks and life jackets. Each rental also includes a small cooler that serves as a cooler, dry box, and a seat for kids. Reach will go over safety procedures and will be back to pick you up when your rental time is over. There is a three hour rental minimum and the time starts as soon as you are in the water.
Reach says a kayak on Lake Georgetown is “Very scenic. Very easy”.
Right now, the business operates exclusively on Lake Georgetown. There are plans to offer rentals on the upper San Gabriel River, as well as guided fishing trips in Georgetown, Granger, and other sections of area rivers.
